Day 11 - Grace of Humility

14 Days of Prayer and Fasting
Grace of Humility
Thursday – Day 11

Thought for Today:

What releases more grace in our lives? Humility. Scripture is very clear about what God thinks of the proud and what pride produces in our lives. Pride is a separator; it separates us from others when we believe that we are better than they are. Pride isolates us from God and others when we think we can do it on our own and we don’t need help from anybody. Pride is an exaggerator; it enlarges “self” to the place of idolatry. Pride loves to compare; it compares my strengths with others' weaknesses.

Pride refuses to admit when it is wrong; it makes my opinion more valuable than others' opinions. The ride of pride always ends in collapse. If there is one person that God cannot help, it is a person steeped in pride who refuses to come humbly before the Lord. Pride would rather suffer loss than admit I am wrong. The danger of pride is that it makes the Lord resist me. You could have anyone resist you, but if God resists you, you are in real trouble.

Humility releases the grace of God in my life. No humility, no grace. No grace, no power to resist the enemy. No power to resist the enemy, I become an open target to any and all attacks. I basically become, excuse the expression, a sitting duck! You and I are no match for the enemy on our own; we need God’s grace to overcome spiritual attacks. We need grace to resist the devil and grace to overcome testing, trials, and temptations. Humility comes before grace is released. The devil has no answer for a person who is humbly submitted to the Heavenly Father. Humility brings covering and protection. James did not say the enemy might flee when we humble ourselves; he said: he will flee.

Humility gives us confidence to approach God’s throne, for there we find the grace we need. Mercy resides in His presence. Kindness can be found in His character. Help is found at His feet. What do you need? The Father has everything you need, and in His grace, He is willing to generously supply what you need. Prayer is an act of humility. Through prayer, we express, "I am vulnerable and transparent in the presence of my Father." That is the core of humility. Humility is honest; it does not hide or pretend, it does not role-play, nor is it self-reliant.

Humility says, “I need God!” which makes me vulnerable and dependent. Humility also says, “I am an open book before the Lord!” There is no need to pretend to be something I am not. I cannot do life without Christ, and I will not do life without Jesus. Because life without Christ is not worth living. If that sounds desperate, it is! There is a spiritual hunger and thirst for the living God that nothing else can satisfy. Humility says, “I don’t care if you think I am weak; as a matter of fact, I am weak and I need grace.” That grace is found in my Father’s presence.

Do you want more grace? Then humble yourself before the Lord. At the right time, he will lift you up in honor.

Verses to Pray and Meditate on:

Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:5-7 (NLT)

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
1 Peter 5:4-6 (NLT)

Prayer Focus:
  • Pray for openness and honesty about where you are in your relationship with the Lord. Don’t justify anything, but let the truth of God’s Word penetrate your heart and reflect on what it means to be vulnerable before the Lord.
  • Make this a day of honest confession, be vulnerable and transparent, and ask for forgiveness where it is needed.
  • Pray that you and your fellow believers will have a willingness to let go of an arrogant and stubborn heart.
  • Pray for a heart willing to be shaped by Christ and to become tender and malleable in His presence.
  • Pray that humility becomes the spiritual attire you wear when you relate to others. Release offenses, repair relationships, and apologize when needed.
  • Pray for a renewal of humility in the Body of Christ so that we may become humble servants who are submitted to the Father and have the grace to resist the enemy and see him flee.
