Daniel Fast Day 11

DEEPLY ROOTED
Your View of Jesus Matters

How do you see Jesus? Before you answer this question, take a moment and ask the Holy Spirit to help you be completely, ruthlessly honest with yourself in how you answer. This is, I believe, the most important question any of us can ask of ourselves. There is not any other question of greater importance, of greater value, or of greater consequence. It is the question that Jesus asked His disciples, “…who do you say that I am?” Matt. 16:15b(NKJV) In essence, “What is your view of Me?” Your view of Jesus will affect every arena of your present life and will determine where you spend eternity. This is not trivial or trite. This is the very foundation upon which we build all of our lives, not simply one portion of our lives.

You cannot be deeply rooted if you get this wrong. Paul admonishes the church in Colossae to get this right because some teachers were denigrating Jesus and denying His Deity. The wrong view of Jesus causes a faulty operating system in life. Meaning, you can get everything else right (according to worldly standards), and get Jesus wrong, and you will end up losing out! Paul uses some of the loftiest language we find in the New Testament. “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.  He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” Colossians 1:15-17(NLT)

Paul leaves no room for ubiquity! Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. If you see Jesus, you know exactly what the Father is like. Jesus is God! He has no beginning, and He has no end. In the eternal dateless past, He is there. Before time, He is. Before the world was, He is. Think about it like this. If you were able to go back to creation, Jesus would be there before anything else was there. If you would shake hands with Jesus in the eternal dateless past, you would be shaking hands with the whole universe because it was in Him. Everything that you see was created for Him, through Him, and by Him! “In the beginning there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  All things were made by him, and nothing was made without him.” John 1:1-3(NCV)

Our problem is not that we have too big of a view of Jesus, our problem is that our view of Jesus is simply not big enough!

Jesus is preeminent in all of creation that we see. He is also preeminent in the world we do not see, the unseen world.  There is no throne, no kingdom, no rule or authority, that Jesus did not create or that is not subject to Jesus. You cannot appeal to a higher authority or ruler than Jesus. There is no one higher, greater, or more significant than Jesus. Jesus not only rules over all, He is the reason the earth and all of creation function to allow life to exist. Jesus is not just the reason for existence, but because of Him all of creation, visible and invisible, are held together. I don’t know if you know that old African American spiritual published in 1927, “He’s got the whole world in His Hands…”. It is a great truth because all of creation derives not only its existence from Jesus but also its continuation. The world works because Jesus is! Jesus is literally holding all of creation together and that includes you!

The writer of Hebrews echoes what John and Paul write, “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”  Hebrews 1:1-3 (NKJV) Everything is being upheld by the Word of His power and He is not panicking one bit. Because once He purged our sins, He sat down at the right hand of Majesty.

How big is Jesus? Big enough! So, now we live life in view of God’s mercy and empowered by Christ’s Person. Nothing should shake us. Nothing should break us. Nothing should distract us. Nothing should entrap us. We are held together by the One who holds everything together. We have nothing to fear because we are rooted in the Creator of all. When we see Jesus for who He is, it changes every decision we make. When we see Jesus for who He is, it changes every action we take. Is there anything too difficult for Him? The Father is speaking to us through the Son. Are we listening?

“Who do you say, I am?” The greatest question, with the greatest potential for victory or defeat. How do you see Jesus?

Prayer and Reflection:

  • In a cynical world, it is easy to get caught in negative thinking that leads to negative behavior. How must you change your view of Jesus, so that it will lead you into more healthy ways of action?
  • Is your view of Jesus too small? Ask the Lord to permanently change your wrong or warped view of Jesus.
  • Knowing that the church is built on the revelation of Christ, and the gates of hell cannot prevail against the Person of Christ, why are you still acting as if it all depends on you? Could that root be pride?
  • Flesh and blood cannot reveal the reality of Christ Jesus, only the Father can. The Word quickened by the Holy Spirit reveals who Jesus is. How much time are you spending in the Word? Compare that to how much time you are spending listening to the voices of the world. Could that be the reason for your diminished view of Jesus? What are you going to do about it?

Jesus, I thank You that You are the visible image of the invisible God. I know that You existed before anything was created and that You are supreme over all creation. That means You are over me, and everything that concerns me. Help me to remind myself daily about who You are, and that the running of the whole world, including mine, is always in your hands.

Jesus, reveal Yourself to me in a greater way. Help me to mix faith with the Word so that I may grow deeper and deeper in my understanding of who You are. Let not a day go by that I do not acknowledge Your greatness and Your authority. I confess that You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God and You are Lord over all, including my Lord and my Savior. Thank You for holding me together. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
